awards season: handmade edition, 2011

For those of us who love to make things with our hands, there can be no better model of precision, piecework, and attention to detail than Antonio Banderas's Robert Ledgard, the mad scientist at the center of the newest Almodovar film, The Skin I Live In (La Qiel Que Habito). I am a quilter, and while my medium is usually calico and his is mostly human skin, I feel a certain kinship with him, as he struggles to match a corner.

my next quilt may be entirely taupe
